How Woofers Came to Be

Fifteen minutes from downtown Rapid City and two minutes from I-90 in Black Hawk, South Dakota, Woofers Pet Resort is the Rapid City area's premier facility for dogs. Its owner, dog trainer Jayme Feary, founded Woofers in Jackson, Wyoming in 2005 as a pet-hiking service. He then started a dog-sitting agency and later added boarding out of his house. After selling his business to one of his employees, he acquired the former Dogwood Lodge property in Sturgis, South Dakota and transformed it into Woofers Pet Resort, a luxury boarding, daycare, and training resort retreat serving the Northern Hills. The Rapid City facility located in Black Hawk is his second location. The resort’s name, Woofers, serves as a tribute to Jayme’s grandfather, who gave animals nicknames according to the sounds they make. (A cow was a "mooer," pig an "oinker," and dog a "woofer." With deep experience, extreme commitment, and open arms, we welcome your “woofers" to our Woofers.

His World Walks on Four Legs

Woofers Pet Resort owner Jayme Feary swapped the corporate world to live out his passions — cowboying, writing, and horse training. Horse training led to dog training which evolved into boarding and daycare. The bottom denominator has always been his working with animals. Jayme earned a bachelor’s degree in agricultural business and economics from Auburn University and a master's degree in writing from the University of Montana where he was a Bertha Morton Fellow. His writings and photography have been published in 75 regional, national. and international publications. He has 35-plus years’ experience working with horses and dogs, an intuitive, spot-on sense of animal behavior, and a strong countenance which provides clear leadership for our pack. His expertise, empathy, and dedication underpin the Woofers Pet Resort experience.
